Dental Implant Procedures

Dental anxiety is a very common problem that many people unfortunately face. In fact, a fear of the dentist or dental treatment can be so severe that it prevents patients from going through with dental work that their oral health absolutely depends on - leading to more and more problems as time goes on

Fortunately however, sleep dentistry makes dental procedures like dental implants much more relaxing and anxiety-free for a patient, while providing many other benefits, as well! And at Asleep for Dentistry, this is our specialty.

Dental implant procedures aren’t as scary as you think (in fact, they’re not scary at all!)

Contrary to what you may believe, dental implant procedures are quite simple - and are certainly painless. They often require just two separate visits to complete, and take an average of 1-2 hours.

During a typical treatment, a small hole is created in the bone with some incisions made into the gum tissue for better bone visualization. The site is then drilled and further prepared in order to precisely fit the dental implant. The implant is then placed, and the site is closed or stitched during the final phase. Healing will generally take place in the following 3 to 6 months following treatment.

Just sit back, relax, and let our experienced dentist take care of you

While a local anaesthetic will successfully numb the area being treated for a pain-free procedure, sleep sedation (or deep sedation) will be able to reduce any anxiety for the patient while allowing the dentist to operate more freely. This is a big bonus, as this also helps to potentially reduce the number of visits required to complete the procedure!

The dentist will be happy to talk with the patient to determine if they should receive local anaesthesia alone, or if they should receive sleep sedation. If a patient is very anxious about their treatment, deep sedation is usually the ideal choice.

Caring for dental implants post-procedure

To help ensure the longevity of your dental implant restoration, it’s important to apply the same daily oral care practices you would for the rest of your smile. This includes brushing gently using a soft-bristle toothbrush twice daily for two minutes each session, in conjunction with flossing once daily, ideally using an implant-friendly dental floss.

More specifically for implant care, it is advised to use a low-abrasive toothpaste with brushing, and ensure you’re brushing both under and around the crown of the implant. It is also recommended to use an interdental brush when cleaning hard-to-reach areas. And of course, it’s important to ensure you see your dentist and hygienist at least every 6 months for a routine check-up and cleaning.

With no measures in place to keep your dental implant clean and free of harmful bacteria regularly, you will be putting your restoration at risk for a condition called peri-implantitis which can result in loss of the implant.
